Note the "feathering" here on the eye where they masked it.AE Pixel Sorter lets you create and experiment with pixel sorting in After Effects with ease. That image also pretty much just used a mask so that it only happens on the right side of the statues face and not over the entire image. In this image it's only taking place on the dark areas sorting upwards though some algorithmes start from a bright pixel and stop at a dark pixel and some just contain the sorting within entirely "dark" or "bright" areas. Pixelsorting involves sorting intervals(strips of where the sorting happens) and a threshold-mask that determines where in the image the intervals are to take place. To get the more tight control over where it happens and making it streaky with long uninterrupted sorting intervals really depends on the image and how you decide to threshold the image. I'm pretty sure that this image may have used my plugin to get the angled sorting and that the other two probably used Processing. Some of them use processing and some of them use other means that get different effects since some people implement the algorithm differently.
